I'm always interested in how much people spend on their weekly food shop. I feel like I spend a fortune, ensuring that my family are eating a healthy diet and they seem never to stop eating. Punnets of fruit disappear at an alarming rate… but, it’s better than sweets (which they have had this week with it being hols (eek!) but only very few, once.)
This week there was a BBC documentary "Britain's favourite food" that stated the average cost per family of four was £80 so I'm glad I'm pretty much average!
But to eat a totally clean diet could amount to more than this and I'd be really interested in how much and what you like to buy to ensure you get a great variety of fruit, vegetables and proteins. One of my favourites is free range eggs, they fill you up, are healthy and loaded with vitamins, keep us all fed and on plan. Avocado is super and Waitrose sell a pack of four for £1.99 which I feel is really great value as they are ripe and ready to eat.
Another thing I do is make our own granola. MCL advocates making your own so you know what exactly has gone into it and for it to be as clean as possible. It’s super easy and so much cheaper than anything you could buy in the shops.
I love to get the kids involved in making this basic recipe, but you can tailor make it to suit your tastes and budget. Goji, acai or dried fruit (be careful with the sugar content here) can all be added. Or additional nuts and seeds. The basic mix will last for ages in the cupboard and can be mixed with yoghurt, fresh fruits, grated apple or add soya/almond milk for something lighter.
You will need:
- 500g oats ( enough to cover a roasting tray in about an inch of oats)
- 3 dessert spoons honey
- A good sprinkle of cinnamon
- 100g mixed seeds
- Coconut oil (optional)
- Dried fruit or berries of your choice, 200g.
- Pre heat oven to 190˚C.
- Pour oats into a baking tray.
- Drizzle on honey.
- Pour on seeds and sprinkle on cinnamon.
- Mix together so all is coated in honey.
- You can also add some melted coconut oil too at this point if you want to but it works fine without.
- Place in oven & WATCH IT!! It will start to brown very quickly - after 2 minutes take it out, stir again and place back into the oven for an additional 2 mins.
- It should be done by now, but all ovens are different. So if it’s not golden repeat again for 2 mins.
- Store and serve. It’s best to let it cool a little but not completely to ensure it all comes out of the tin well and doesn't stick fast to the bottom.
This gets your mornings off to a great start!
